It Is Flattering To Be Copied; But When Do You Consider Something Out Right Theft?

Vancouver Realtor Julia Lau launched a new website. The only problem is that it is a complete copy of an Ubertor website. It Is Flattering To Be Copied; But When Do You Consider Something Out Right Theft? The really funny thing is that she choose to copy an old version of one of our templates. We stopped offering this template almost 2 years ago.

Why would you bother doing this? Is saving $37/month really worth it?

Realtors don’t pay a monthly fee for our software because of our templates.

They pay the monthly fee for the constant improvement to our system; the search engine optimization; the live support; the flexibility; the customization; the look and feel of their listings; the foresight of the system; the video integration; the built in blog; plus much much more.

In the last 2 years we have added:
– syndication functionality to Youtube and Vimeo
– control over links addition/deletion functionality
– listing photos drag and drop functionality added
– ability to add your complete listing to Craigslist quickly and easily
– complete control over your Robots.txt file
– landing page creation tool for your Google Adwords (or any advertisements)
– ability to add a custom Favicon
– CSS complete unlock, system wide
– plus tons more

How do I know that this is not just a similar looking website? (lots of our competitors copy our look and feel) But check the source code; you will notice the word “ubertor” in it a few times. I attached an image below.

So, is it flattering to be copied; When Do You Consider Something Out Right Theft?

I think we all know that “Immitation Is The Sincerest Form Of Flattery” however what this person doesn’t know is that esthetics are just one part of a website – the backend is just as important. Its the SEO capabilties that we pay for with Ubertor and saving some money on a website and copying a competitor will really do nothing to improve her business, not to mention her Google rankings.

I just read that Julia Lau stole Ubertor website idea and I would like to submit my opinion on this issue…that’s it…thanks. Those copy cats and steal original ideas without paying copyrights are lowest of the low.
